Description
Hat: World War I medical corps M-1911campaign hat. It is olive drab felt wool. It is approximately 5" high, 6 1/2" wide head hole, 8" long head hole. It has a 2 7/8" wide brim. The crown is rounded at the top. There is an olive air vent hole on each of the four sides of the crown. Around the crown and brim joint is a 1" wide olive brown grosgrain band. The band forms a flat bow on the left side. There is a brown leather 1/4" wide chin strap with a buckle on the top right side. It is inserted through a hole on the brim. The left side strap is missing. Around the top outside edge of the brim is five olive stitched lines. Around the bottom inside is a 1 5/8" brown leather band. At the back center of the band is the remnant of a red paper label with silver print. Written in black pen on the inside front crown is "MYRON W SMITH/Capt(?) M.C.". Under the band at the back center is a white paper size label with a black "7 3/8". On the left side under the band is a cream paper label with black print. It has a circle with a globe in the center with a U.S. flag on each side and two hands shaking under it. Around the circle is printed "THE UNITED STATES HATTERS OF NORTH AMERICA". Below the circle is "REGISTERED". There is a "17" to the top left of the circle. Stamped in black on the underside of the band on the left side is "NEW YORK DR___(?)/_.W.F. STOREY/W.S.(?) I________". Condtion - There are a few black and dark green spots on the right side on the joint band and the crown by the band. The chin strap holes and the buckle are corroding. The inside leather band has a rip at the front center and it is worn. The band is coming detached. MOLD - The hat had mold. It was laid out to dry and was vacuumed on 1/4/2006.
Worn by Dr. Myron W. Smith of Red Wing. He was a Captain in the Medical Corps at Camp Custer, Michigan. Joined the service August 23, 1918.Geographic Notes
