Umbrella: Black cotton umbrella. The umbrella is 31 3/4" long from ferrule to handle. The cover is black cotton. There is a 5/8" wide black grosgrain band around the bottom of the cover. Towards the bottom of the cover is a 1/8" wide x 7 3/4" long black woven cotton strip loop that wraps around the cover. It is fastened to the cover by a dark brown celluloid? button above the loop. There is no inside cover. The cover is approximately 23 1/4" long (at a rib) and has an approximately 38" diameter when opened. It has black metal ribs. The tips of the ribs are light brown transparent bakelite?. The stick is black metal. The bottom of the stick has a 5 1/4" long and approximately a 1 3/8" diameter rounded light brown wood straight handle. The middle of the handle has black engraved diagonal lines with one horizontal line below it and two horizontal lines above it. The bottom of the handle tapers out very slightly into a flat rounded bottom. Towards the bottom of the handle is a 1/4" wide x approximately 22" long black woven cotton shoelace like looped tie. It is inserted through holes in the handle. The ferrule is 2" long. The bottom half is black and the top half is light brown transparent bakelite?. The sliding tube that opens the umbrella is silver colored metal that was black. There is a metal clip inside the tube that is pushed in to open the cover. On the inside at the top of the ribs is a black cotton circle. There is a cream paper label with "18" printed in red.
Belonged to the Hazel Hoyt's mother, Florence McCart Hoyt. Florence McCart Hoyt was born on 11/25/1862 in Watworth County, Wisconsin. She spent her girlhood in Red Wing and moved to Minneapolis in 1883. She married Elmore Sherman Hoyt on 1/15/1888. Elmore Sherman Hoyt was born on 8/22/1863 in Kansas. He moved to Red Wing when he was 17 years old. Hazel Hoyt was born on 3/2/1891 in Hennepin County, Minnesota. They moved to Red Wing around 1893. Elmore Sherman Hoyt worked for the Red Wing Potteries. He died on 7/9/1948. Florence Hoyt died on 3/9/1960. Hazel Hoyt died on 6/17/1976. They are buried in Minneapolis.
