View from Durkee's HotelCreation Date
1876Description
This is a 9cm x 18 black and white reproduction photograph titled "View from Durkee's Hotel" from 1876. Looking toward the lake from what is now the corner of 1st Avenue and 1st Street NE, you can see the village of Glenwood and Lake Minnewaska - then known as White Bear Lake. The buidling in the left foreground is the Lathrop and Kinney office that was used as a courthouse. The building in the center foreground is the bank. The current Minnesota Avenue would run right behind the bank and through the fence around the yard next to the hardware store, and then alongside the log cabin that was Rue's drugstore. The largest building in the photo is the Wollan Brothers' store also known as the Fremad Association. One of my favorite features of this photo is the line in the grass running from the lower right hand corner of the picture to the little fenced in area in the center/left. That is the first waterworks system. Water was piped via tamarack logs from a reservoir north east of the city. The logs were buried 4 feet underground and ran to a trough near what would become the corner of Minnesota Avenue and 1st Street SE/NE. Water was piped from here to other locations around town, but this was a central well location.
