Papers collected by Leo A. Ketterer from his time serving with the United States Navy and life in Shakopee after his retirement. Ketterer was born in Shakopee in 1883. At the age of 16 he enlisted in the Navy and was trained at the Naval school in Newport, RI. Ketterer spent 47 years in the Navy. He visited every major port in the world and accompanied such notables as President Warren G. Harding, Secretary of the Navy Edwin Denby, and Rear Admiral William T. Sampson on trips. Ketterer also received commendations for service in the Philippine, Mexican, and Nicaraguan campaigns as well as World War I. He retired as a Captain.
This paper group consists of the following:
-A Christmas menu from the U.S.S. Reina Mercedes, 1929.
-Legal proceedings from an inquiry made by the Board of Investigation at the Navy Yard in New York, NY. A claim had been submitted by Lieutenant Earl Bailey to the General Accounting Office concerning rental and subsistence allowance for a period of three months in 1923. Ketterer is listed as having been a witness and defendant at the trial.
-Correspondence between Ketterer and Lieutenant H. L. Phelps of the Judge Advocate General's Office concerning Bailey's case, 1925.
-Certificate of settlement between the General Accounting Office and Ketterer, 1936.
-Correspondence between Ketterer and the General Accounting Office from 1924 and 1937 concerning the status of his mother, Mary Eva Ketterer, as a dependent.
-Correspondence between Ketterer and the General Accounting Office concerning back pay owed to Ketterer, 1937.
-Memos Ketterer sent to the General Accounting Office and Comptroller of the United States concerning suspensions and disallowances, 1924-1925.
-Court opinion and letter concerning a Navy case in Massachusetts concerning payments made to Navy lieutenants, 1925 and 1928.
-Correspondence from the General Accounting Office to Ketterer reminding of monies owed to the United States, 1924.
-Letter from Richard Mertz to Ketterer, 1942. Mertz had been seeking Ketterer's advice about enlisting in the Navy during World War II.
-A handwritten diary of his travels written in a partial ledger book from August 1947-January 1948.
-Certificates from the Scott County Welfare Board showing payments made to Leo Ketterer for rent expenses, 1963-1964.
-A release form between Harry and Louise Runtzel, Fred Arnoldt, and Leo Ketterer concerning a car accident in 1963.
-Copies of probate deeds naming Ketterer as the Executor for the Estate of the late Englebert Ketterer, 1945.
