Description
United States Army issued haversack for carrying a canister-type gas mask. The piece was issued to Joseph Lehnen during his service in World War I. The haversack is green canvas. It is square shaped with a tan cotton strap. It has a flap closure with metal snap closures. Seen along the front seams of the haversack are two metal squares. A piece of cording runs the length of the bag and is looped through each square. Seen at one side of the haversack below the strap is a metal bar, possibly for attaching the bag to a soldier's belt. Printed in black on the flap closure is "3." Printed in black on the front of the bag is a serial number. Handwritten on the bottom of the bag is "J. L." Lehnen's name appears to be handwritten on the back of the sack. No maker's marks.Geographic Notes
