Description
"Monarch" brand stereoscope used to view stereographs. The stereoscope was owned and used by the donor's grandmother, who lived in Shakopee. The piece has a wooden base shaped like a cross. Seen at one end is a decorative aluminum eyepiece. The cross bar of the base has two metal prongs for holding photographs in place. Underneath the cross bar is a metal and wood handle that flips up/down for easier use. Decorative dot and swirl patterns are seen on the exterior of the aluminum along with a logo reading "Monarch." The edge of the aluminum where it touched the user's face is lined with brown cloth, most likely velvetine. Pressed into the underside of the base near the handle is "Manufactured by Keystone View Co./Meadville, PA./Pat'd (illegible) 12, 1904."
