Description
World War II service medal set awarded posthumously to Raymond Dahl of Shakopee. The piece is a Purple Heart. The set consists of the medal, service ribbon, lapel button, and carrying case. The top of the ribbon consists of a purple fabric ribbon with white stripes on each side. A metal clasp closure is at the back of the ribbon. Attached by a link at the bottom of the ribbon is a gold medallion. The medallion is heart shaped. At the center of the heart is an image of George Washington in profile against an inlaid purple background. Above Washington's head is a shield with red stars and stripes against a white background. The shield is flanked by green olive branches. Seen in raised letters on the backside of the heart is "For Military Merit." The service ribbon is a purple fabric ribbon with white stripes at each end. It is attached to a gold metal clasp. The lapel button is gold and rectangle shaped. It is inlaid in purple and white. The carrying case in navy blue plastic. Seen in gold on the lid is a floral pattern along the left edge, it reads "United States of America." The interior of the case is white satin with a gray plastic insert for holding each ribbon. Dahl served in the Army Air Corps. His plane was shot down over Berlin during a bombing mission and he was officially declared MIA on March 18, 1945. The medal was awarded to the Dahl family, upon their request, in 2007.
