Description
A surveying tripod. The tripod consists of a wooden stand with a metal scope attached to the top of it. The stand is hand cut and sanded with a medium varnish. Approximately six inches down from the top of the stand the wood is cut into three legs. The legs open/close with a screw and wing nut. The legs taper and the bottom of each leg is carved into a thin post with a metal cover. Seen at the top of the post is a metal scope. The scope is attached to a curved base. The base has a spring on one end and adjustable screw on the other for moving the piece up and down. A tag with the donation reads "Level and cherry '1725.'/Tripod w/flag stick./Lost in New Prague area while surveying. Uncovered in 1858 while plowing. Possibly made in Missouri by German immigrants."Geographic Notes
