Description
Handwoven basket. The basket was made by Margaret Whitney of Prior Lake and entered into both the Scott County Agricultural Fair and the Scott County Fair in 1921. The piece is round and made of grass. It has a flat bottom and flared rim. The rim is dyed green. Seen on the interior sides of the basket are green dyed geometric figures resembling capitol "I"s. The basket has handles. The handles appear to be small metal rings covered with grass dyed green. Adhered to the interior of the basket is a slip of paper. Handwritten in black ink on the paper is "Margaret (illegible). age 8. Whitney. Prior. Dist. 49 (illegible) Lake." Attached to one of the handles are two cardstock paper tags. One tag is brown printed in black. It is an exhibitor's tag that reads "Scott County Agricultural Fair/Sept. 1-2-3, 1921/Exhibitors No./Division/Class No./Lot No." The tag is not filled in. The other tag is purple printed in black. It reads "1st. Premium/Scott County Fair/Jordan, Minnesota/September 15, 16 and 17th, 1921." That tag was printed by the People's Weekly in Jordan.
