Description
Brass decoration of the coat of arms for Montevideo, Uruguay. The decoration was a gift to Maurice Stans, probably from the Ambassador. The imagery in the oval is divided into four quadrants. The first quadrant contains the scales of justice, the second is a fortress on a hill overlooking a large body of water, the third is a horse, and the forth is an ox. The oval is flanked by laurel branches on the left and olive branches on the right which are tied with a bow at the bottom. The sun, which has a face with plump cheeks, is at the top of the oval with long sharp rays radiating outward. The back of the oval has an etched inscription which is partially covered by a white office label. The part of the inscription which is visible reads, "Mr. Maurice Stans Secretary of Commerce recuerdo de su...22 Abril 1970." The office label reads, "Miniature shield gift of Montevideo, Uruguay. 4/22/70".
