Description
Ivory elephant given at a gift to Maurice Stans in 1968 (A). The elephant is mounted to a wooden base via four small wooden pegs in the elephant's feet. There is also a silver colored metal plate attached to the wood base which reads, "To Maurice H Stans/With Affection and Esteem/ From your 1968 New York Finance Team/ Nixon-Agnew Campaign." The names of all of the contributors are also etched on the plate. At one point there was a note affixed to the underside of the base with tape which explained the provenance for the elephant (B). According to the note the elephant is over 100 years old and was carved by an unknown Japanese artist. Bill Middendorf found it in New York in the Hartman Galleries. The note is a communication between the secretaries for William (Bill) Middendorf and Maurice Stans.
