Description
Electric autoclave with heater in ceramic base; nickel-plated steel cover with two vents; and perforated removable tray in interior; handle at side to open lid; four rubber feet. Found by donor several years ago in the basement of the former Messner Drug, later known as Boston Drug and Arneson Drug, located in the south side of the Merchants Hotel on Atlantic Avenue in Morris. Thought by donor to date to 1892, but date seems unlikely. Because of its small size, donor says it was most likely used in a doctor's office, rather than a hospital, to sterilize scalpels for lancing, glass syringes, etc. Rubber covering of electrical cord is very hardened and brittle.
