Description
Believed to be a quilt made by the Red Cross Auxiliary of School District 23 (the Messner School) of Hodges township. A brief article in the February 28, 1919 Hancock Record reports a basket social at that school, including “The Red Cross quilt was auctioned off to And. McArthur for $39.00.” The embroidered names on the quilt include Hancock area servicemen and Hancock area residents. Proceeds from the basket social were used to finish the basement of the school building for use as a community gathering place.
