Description
Typewriter - Lambert model with wooden case. It was manufactured between 1900 and 1902. The letters are located on a central dial. When the user pressed on the desired letter, the plate underneath swings the proper letter down to the paper. This model #1 is one of the first 3000 machines as the dial can be rotated to the left or right so that the letters are printed at a slant, mimicking italics.
The typewriter is in a wooden case which has metal hinges and a snap-like closing with a leather handle. In the inside of the top cover is a compartment for articles needed to use and maintain the typewriter. On top of the case is a decal of a globe with "New York, Lambert Typewriter printed on it.
T.O. Ofsthun purchased this typewriter in 1908 and later gave it to William Engebretson who donated it to the Historical Society. Serial number 2023.
