"NEVERBREAK/TRUNKS/ MANUFACTURED BY/ L. GOLDSMITH /& SON/ NEWARK/ NEW JERSEY. U.S.A./ G-S-6(?)-1292-N 12/7/18"Description
World War I-era trunk owned by Walter Isaacson. Trunk is a weathered gray and brown wood with leather handles on either side, attached by black, fasteners. Brass colored metal is riveted along each edge, with a black metal corner bumper attached to each corner with silver metal rivets. A black metal lip runs around the bottom edge of the lid. Two black metal latches with brass hasps are attached to either side of the front of the trunk, with a brass hasp lock in the middle to connect the lid and the body of the trunk. The middle lock reads: "L. GOLDSMITH & SON/ NEWARK, N.J./NEVERBREAK/TRUNKS/ UG350" A small metal plate is fastened to the top of the trunk lid and reads: "NEVERBREAK/TRUNKS/ MANUFACTURED BY/ L. GOLDSMITH /& SON/ NEWARK/ NEW JERSEY. U.S.A./ G-S-C-1292-N 12/7/18" There are four nearly illegible luggage stickers on the trunk: two on either side for the front, one on the top, and one on the right side as you are looking at the trunk. One of the stickers on the front is ripped, and upside down, but partially legible: "AMERICAN RAILWAY EXPRESS CO./ 172 ____MPSTEAD, N.Y. 952F'" A brass-colored lid stay holds the lid when opened. Inside the box is a wooden inset tray divided (2012.005.001b) into three sections. The tray sits on four brass brackets attached to each inside corner, about 2 inches from the top of the trunk.
