1Description
Woven woolen shawl with striped boarder and fringe all the way around. Colors are charcoal gray and black with shades of gray in the stripes. One half of the shawl is black and the other half is gray. It would have been worn folded in half so that either the black or gray side would have shown. There are several small holes throughout the shawl. Fringe has been worn in spots. There is an eight inch mend on one edge where shawl was torn.
Darlene born May 1927 received the shawl from her maternal grandmother Alvina Hoppe Mesenbrink. Alvina married Henry F. Mesenbrink in June of 1899. The shawl came with Alvina and her parents, August and Bertha Hoppe from Germany in the 1870’s when Alvina was a small child. August and Bertha immigrated from the province of Pomeranio with three small children and had three more children in the United States.
The shawl probably made on a loom in a factory was used as a blanket or a cloak in place of a coat. Darlene’s mother, Ella Martha Amanda Mesenbrink married Emil Otto Giese in 1925. She used the shawl to wrap her older children in when they went visiting or to church in a sleigh in the 1920’s and 30’s. Darlene married Harry A. Hauglund 25 March 1947 and also used the shawl to wrap her children in the cold of winter. Darlene and Harry have six living children; Judy (Charles) VanKempen - Chokio, Janette (Robert) Brown - Alberta, Joanne (Steve) Miajola - Delano, MN, Jim (JoAnne Amborn) Haugland - Donnelly, Joyce (Rick) Kramer - Alberta, Jenifer (Scott) Thompson - Lowry, MN.
