Description
10 cent paper coin used by Todd Guggisberg. It is a circular disk on cardstock with full color printing. One side says "AAFES 10 c Gift Certificate". The other side has a photo of 2 soldiers. One has a metal detector and the other in on his knees checking in the soil. It reads, "This gift certificate has a retail value of 10c and is redeemable at any AAFES facility. 2006B"
According to Todd it is a ten cent Army and Air Force Exchange (AAFES) medallion. The AAFES were small stores on bases in Afghanistan that sold things like military clothing, soda, DVDs, tobacco etc. Rather than deal with accounting and transporting metal coins in Afghanistan, soldiers would get these medallions as change instead. In most cases they got wet, lost or destroyed, which meant additional revenue for AAFES.
