Sometimes the fires came from out of town, from the wind-fed wildfires that raced through the grassland. Sometimes the fires started in the home, in a chimney or wood stove. However a fire began, the wood frame buildings of the day could burn with devastating results. As early as 1890, the citizens of Morris, Minnesota responded with a volunteer fire department that encompassed a variety of ethnic and social groups, and for more than a century volunteer fire fighters have protected the lives and property of the people in Stevens County and beyond. When the Call Comes is the story of the Morris Fire Department and how the volunteers have served not only as firefighters, but also as first responders in a broad range of situations. It's a story of changing equipment as fire departments evolved from lines of citizens with buckets of water to today's modern trucks and protective gear. But just as important, the story is about how a diverse community builds the institutions that characterize small-town America.
