Description
Sabre or sword - metal sheath case, steel blade, lock. Made by Weyersberg Krschbaum &Co. in Solingen Germany. In metal sheath, this sword measures 33" long form the hilt. It is standard equipment for cavalry dress. The handle is gracefully curved and the hilt has a ribbed design. This sword has no documented history. It was bought by the donor for $5.00 from a young man who needed the money. According to internet research, it is the almost straight bladed sword made in Germany for an artilleryman. These were made in Germany and imported for use in Argentina. It would date from the late 1800’s to before World War 1. The symbol of the Argentine army, the makers mark, the letters RA and the number 3535 are stamped on the sword. The letters RA and the number 3514 are stamped on the scabbard. Weyersberg, Kirschbaum & Co (WKC) has been manufacturing military swords and cutlery in Solingen, Germany, a city famous since the middle ages for its metal-working and craftsmanship in sword making. The traditional manufacturing of swords at WKC dates back to the year 1774 when the Weyersberg first registered the ''Kings head'' as their trademark. Later in 1883 the company merged with the Kirschbaums and the company WKC was formed as it exists still today.
