Description
Hand pieced quilt cover with light orange, tan and beige fabric. It contains 16 orange squares with the same design on each. There are 9 beige squares with different designs. Designs include hand shapes, circles with diamonds and floral motifs.
From the N.B. Squire family.
According to Quilt appraiser Sue Harmon: The quilt goes by several names, most commonly "Eight Hands Around" or "Wandering Foot". There is a story that you don't give a bachelor a Wandering Foot for fear he won't marry and settle down! The creator of the museum's quilt added some original appliqués of hands, and other geometries. As I had mentioned, the brown was probably a green originally. I would place a circa of 1860 on the quilt.
