Description
Customhouse certificate: “Certificate of 33 boxes of brown sugar exported from Boston on July 14, 1817”. The original certificate was removed from the wood frame and a photocopy was put into its place. The framed copy is in the PIC.CAB.CM1. One of Major Royal A. Stone’s name cards was also enclosed in the frame. The cardboard backing on the frame is the corner of a Wilkin County map, Grove Land & Loan Co’s, Map of Wilkin County, Famous Red River Valley. A Morris Tribune Newspaper article was tapped to the back of the frame, part of it is quoted below;
Morris Trib 1920 - “Library receives old document bearing the signature of one of the most vigorous and well known leaders of the famous Boston Tea Party, Thomas Melvill has been received by the Morris Public Library, thru the courtesy of Royal A. Stone of St. Paul...” The framed certificate which had been housed at the Morris Public Library was gifted to SCHS by current librarian, Melissa Yauk. Copy of the letter which accompanied the donation of the certificate to the library by Mr. Stone was included with the certificate 7/20/2011; the original letter is housed in the UMM Briggs library archive center, S1058-1062, Box #5.
