Article describes Mayor Mary Anderson's career including her involvement with the Golden Valley League of Women Voters, Golden Valley Planning Commission for 4 years, Golden Valley Board of Zoning Appeals for 2 years, 3 terms on city council, 7 years as chair of the Housing and Redevelopment Authority, and two stints as mayor: 1984-90 and 1995-2001. She also served as chair of the Metropolitan Council from 1991-92. She was the second woman ever elected to Golden Valley city council. Also her involvement as past president of the League of Minnesota Cities, the Association of Metropolitan Municipalities, and the Minnesota Mayor's Association. She also served on the board and as president of the Citizens League, a public advocacy organization.Active in Robbinsdale District 281 for over 30 years, including with the Community Ahead, Reach Out and Read, and Success by 6 initiatives. Won 5 major awards including Macalester College Distinguished Citizen Award in June 1976; TwinWest Chamber of Commerce Women of Achievement Award in October 1985; Metropolitan Council Regional Citizen of the Year in March 1990; Susan B. Anthony Award from the Hamline Center for Women in Government in May 1990; and the League of Minnesota Cities C.C. Ludwig Award in June 1990.
