Description
One (1) pastel portrait drawn by Laura Schack in 1994 at an Anoka studio space. The subject is Paul Pierce II. He was well known as an Anoka businessman and supporter of the arts. He sang in operas and operettas, performed in plays and musicals, and appeared on local television and radio programs. In 1965 he created the Anoka Theatre Ensemble. Other models in the "People Painters" series included Sally Martin in traditional Philippine garb, a ninth grade student in a wheelchair, a young pregnant mother, two Anoka pastors, a 12-year-old dancer in costume, a community and arts benefactor, a young nurse in uniform, a teenage girl musician, a married couple who ran their own business, a young mother who has horses and other animals, and a master gardener. The director of the "People Painters" series was Jan Johansen.
"Paul was one of the models invited by out group, Anoka County People Painters, which was started as a grant project from MRAC. We had many artist participants and the models were all from Anoka County with different backgrounds. We exhibited out portraits at galleries when we were done with the program. 'Portraits from Anoka County' was the name of out exhibits. The painting has resided in my home gallery in East Bethel since that time." -Laura Schack
