She taught nursing skills to the Sisters of St. Francis, who opened St. Marys Hospital in 1889, and later married Charles H. Mayo, MD. Throughout her life, Edith Graham Mayo maintained a strong commitment to serving the needs of patients. She was named American Mother of the Year in 1940.
