Description

After years of discussion, 3M Company considered purchasing one of two sites (as outlined by the white lines) to build a new headquarters and research center. The land to the west of McKnight Road (left side) offered city water and sewer and higher taxes in St. Paul. The farm land to the east of McKnight Road (right side) offered lower taxes in New Canada township. In 1952 they purchased 140 acres in the township, which became Maplewood in 1957.
