Description
This large statue, standing over nine feet tall, is a three-dimensional representation of the logo of the Moline Plow Company, the Flying Dutchman. The Dutchman is dressed in blue jacket, white trousers and a red shirt. He sports a black cravat and dark shoes. He sports a pair of white wings. He holds an ear of corn aloft in his right arm. He stands on a tree stump which has an orange crest marked "MM."This statue was donated to HHM by Minneapolis-Moline in 1969. The Flying Dutchman was the company's trademark and was also known as "The Old Man of the Sea." The logo and others like it fell victim to anti-German sentiment after America entered World War One. The Moline Company was owned by German-Americans.
