Description
This covered ceremonial basket, made by the Northwest Indians of very fine cedar root, is in three shades of brown, light to dark. It is 4 inches in diameter by 3 1/2 inches high. Two matching bands circle the body of the basket, and the same band is carried out around the rim of the cover. In the large knob on the cover the Indians have inserted small stones which rattle. This cover is shaken during ceremonial dances to keep the rhythm for the dancer. The Indians of the Northwest use the following weaves in their basketry: twined;plaited; and coiled.
This basket has 21 x 14 stitches per inch.
