The company was founded in 1902 by George Draper Dayton, who constructed a six-story building for his new company on the corner of Nicollet and 7th Street in downtown Minneapolis. When Dayton's finally changed its name to Marshall-Fields in 2001, there were 19 Dayton's Department stores serving communities across the upper Midwest. Dayton's is still remembered for its elaborate holiday displays and luxurious high-quality merchandise. It's also remembered for its role in establishing the next generation of discount retailers: the Dayton Company opened the first Target store in 1962.
