Description
Large, white, fur hat with a wide up-turned brim and five ostrich feathers nestled into the brim. The feathers are gathered together with a silk box and a metal clip with rhinestone decorations. There is a tag on the hat that reads "The Young-Quinlan Company".In 1896 Frederick D. Young decided to open a store located in the Syndicate Building at 513 Nicollet Ave. and asked Elizabeth C. Quinlan to join him. In 1903 Fred acknowledged his friends talents by changing the name of the company to Young-Quinlan. Fred died a few years later but Elizabeth took the company to world-wide fame, and in honor of her friend, she never changed the name of the company. In 1926 she built the Young-Quinlan building on the corner of Nicollet Avenue and 9th Street. In her 80's she sold the company but retained ownership of the building. She died in 1947. Two years later, in 1949, the Maurice L. Rothschild Company, then run by Maurice's wife Hulda, merged with the Young-Quinlan Company and moved into the Y-Q Building. The Young-Quinlan Building stands today, saved from demolition by Robert and Sue Greenberg.
