Description
"A silver ring set with a large oval turquoise stone. The turquoise has deep gold veins, a sign of value for a turquoise stone. Around the stone is a border of silver balls, four on each side." The stone is .5 x .75 inches. This ring came to Cleora from Mrs. James Nahkai, her laundress in Shiprock, New Mexico. Miss Helbing bought a gift for Mrs. Nahkai and had it wrapped prettily in wrapping paper and ribbon. Mrs. Nahkai was so excitd to recieve a package wrapped in "the white man's way", she insisted that Miss Helbing take this ring, which had once belonged to Mrs. Hahkai's mother. "I was so touched to think that for something as inconsequential and habitual to me as the wrapping of a package I should be given so much. So I put on the ring Mrs. Nakhai had given me. and for many years it never left my finger, not even for washing. For I used it as a reminder that even though I might be tired, I should always think to do something for a person who might be in need of a kind action or a thoughtful word." - From the exhibit booklet.
