Description
Photograph of a threshing crew with a steam traction engine, a threshing machine, and a horse drawn water wagon. The crew is on top of and in front of the rig. A note taped to the back reads:
"Threshing Rig: 16 Horse Power Advance Traction Engine and 32 "Minnesota Chief" grain thresher - note the absence of blower and feeder attachment. This outfit was owned by Emil, Herman, and Carl Peterson (aka Korpaas), August and Emile Turnquist, Ole Salquist, and Peder Engebretson -- 6 Swedes and 1 Norwegian.
This partnership was organized in the 1880s, starting with a horse drawn sweep as power, replaced later by a 12 HP "Little Giant" return flue traction engine (Chain Drive) and in the late 1890s, operated the superb model of excellence shown in the photo. Later a self feeder was added, the work done by Emil Petersonm, why must have been a skilled carpenter, as the feeder required considerable mortising to fit it securely to the machine. Later a swinging straw stacker was added. This "Stacker" could be raise, lowered, or swung so as to get the straw away from the machine, and replace the one or two "Straw Bosses." It rode on four wheels behind the machine, and some member of the crew named it "Kjaringa" presumably because wherever the machine went, "Kjaringa maat bli med" (Kjaringa came along). In 1904 or 1904 the rig was sold to Frank Rosengren, who got rid of the stacker and replaced with a blower, but found that the 16 HP Advance did not have enough power with this additional blower, so he traded in the 16 HP for a 22 HP traction engine."
Information given by Herman Engebretson of Lowry in May 1977.
