Description
This is the folk costume for Ærø, Denmark. Made by Barbara Andersen in 1981, it was worn for events in the Danish community in Minneapolis. It consists of an blue striped underskirt in cotton, an overskirt in brown and white pinstripe wool, a striped apron, a blouse descrlbed as a pillowcase with sleeves, and a scarf that Barbara made to simulate Tambour embroidery. There is a lined vest, the same as the wool skirt , a cotton jacket and a close fitting cap of black silk with ribbons. The back of the cap features a beaded embroidered floral pattern. The over-cap is a startched white cotton triangle or hat, with ribbons to tie. The back corner bends up, indicating it is from the Marstal end of the island of Ærø. On the front is a four inch wide lace starched brim. The lace for the hat came from a crocheted antimacassar from Barbara's mother in law. It was worn at Festival of Nations, Scandinavia Today Celebration in 1982 and Danish Days at the Danish American Center. Mary Busch wore this costume to The Scandinavian Ball in 2020.
