This painting shows a ship in full sail passing in front of the city of Helsingǿr and Kronborg Slot, both well-known places in Denmark, therefore a popular subject for a seascape. The subject also has deeper literary and political interest. Kronborg castle is immortalized as Elsinore in William Shakespeare's play Hamlet and it has political interest because it shows that geography gave Denmark control of the Danish straits (Skagerrak and Kattegat), linking the Baltic and North Seas. This gave Denmark historical international stature.
