Description

This is an oil portrait of John Niell, father of Frank A. Neill, grandfather of Anna Neill Hare. This image was painted by Dollie Neill. John came from County Down, Ireland and was a descendant of Irish Kings. He settled in Westfield, New York and lived there for 10 years. He came to Winona, landing on the day President Lincoln was shot. From then on he lived in Sumner township until his death in October 1887. He is buried in Hamilton Cemetery. The portrait is in a wooden frame, varnished dark brown and also lighter brown. The inner edge was painted gold. A few images were carved into the outer edge of the frame.
