9.25in H x 8.5in W x 4.5in D Item (Overall)
A Gamewell Fire Alarm Telegraph Register with a brass square shaped case set on an iron base as well as a paper tape wheel, which is visible near the front upper right corner of the case. The clockwork mechanism that turned the wheel is visible through the glass sides and top. The maker’s plaque is adhered to the front of the case, near the upper left corner. The manufacturer’s name, The Gamewell Company, as well as multiple patent dates and the number "1431" are featured on the plaque. Two electromagnetic coils are visible on the underside of the device as well as several wires.
This electrically-activated printer originally received Morse code messages from telegraph fire call boxes. Electric pulses would energize the electromagnets under that device, which move a lever-arm holding a pen or stylus. The clockwork mechanism inside the case would then pull the strip of paper across the pen/stylus, recording the message.
