THE PHISTER MANUFACTURING CO. / CINCINNATI, OHIODescription
The Phister Manufacturing Company Brand Phister No. 1B-EM Carbon Tetrachloride Pump Fire Extinguisher With 1 Gallon Steel Tank. [NOTE: The original manufacturer label has worn away on this fire extinguisher. This identification comes from a similar/identical extinguisher in the museum's collection with an intact manufacturer label (see INV2023.640).]
Round cylindrical steel metal one (1) gallon tank with a flat circular bottom. On the top of the tank is a pumping mechanism. The pump has a black-painted wooden handle. The handle is round with cone-shaped ends. On the back of the top of the tank is a hand wheel. Turning the wheel to the left releases the stream and turning the wheel to the right stops the stream. Attached to the right side of the pump is a small and short black rubber hose with a metal nozzle. There is a red label on the hose. On the front of the top of the tank is a round black-and-white gauge with a glass glaze. Over the gauge is a round metal handle. Attached to the handle is a handwritten price tag that reads "$8.00". On the back of the top of the extinguisher is a wall hanging hook. On the top of the left side of the tank is a hook to attach the rubber hose. On the front of the tank there is evidence of a manufacturer label that has since been worn away. Written on back left side of the tank "WIGGINS".
NOTE: The tank is heavy, so handle with care. It seems the gauge indicates that the tank is empty, but confirmation is needed. If the tank is full, it is recommended that it be safely emptied as the original does not need to be preserved.
