A 1952 Ford F-5 C.O.E. (Cab-Over-Engine) chassis (2001.03.001a) supporting a truck trailer (2001.03.001b) and smoke extractor unit (2001.03.001c). The fire apparatus was built by the M.F.D. Repair Shop, and is carrying four (4) large flexible suction tubes (2001.03.001d-g).
a) The 1952 Ford F-5 chassis is painted red and features the gold insignia for the Minneapolis Fire Department painted on the nose of the hood and on the two (2) side doors of the cab. The hood is short in size and has a rounded top. Silver metal embellishments decorate the left and right sides of the hood and feature the blue text “FORD F-5.” Additionally, the name “FORD” is also printed on the nose, at the top of the silver metal border of three (3) vent openings. The front fenders are made of a single piece of metal that wraps around the hood and includes integrated headlamps. These headlamps are connected by a wide aerodynamic cross piece with three (3) similarly aerodynamic supports. There are two (2) doors on the sides of the cab that extend beneath the cab’s floor. Each door has a silver metal handle, a rear-view mirror, and a vent window at the top. At the front of the cab is a flat, one-piece windshield, while a large rear window is at the back. Two (2) dark orange upholstered seats are behind the dashboard. However, the passenger’s seat is detached from the floor and positioned upside down. There is a rubber 'B.F. Goodrich' tire on each side of the chassis, underneath the front fenders.
b) The truck trailer is made of black metal, with wooden floor boards comprising the base. A forty (40) inch tall rectangular black metal box is on the front of the trailer, directly behind the cab. A dark metal plaque is attached to both sides of the box, near the top. The silver colored text on the plaque reads “BUILT IN THE M.F.D. REPAIR SHOP.” The truck trailer has two (2) side platforms covered in black metal. A fourteen and a half (14.5) inch high and forty-six and a half (46.5) inch wide black metal box is on each of the side platforms. Black fenders at the rear of the trailer cover two (2) pairs of 'B.F. Goodrich' rubber tires. Finally, there is a platform at the back of the trailer that supports three (3) black metal boxes. The central box has a wooden lid and features the large, bold letters “M.F.D.” that are made of tape.
c) The extractor unit is composed of a Sturtevant multi-vane fan attached to a large, black metal suction system. The fan has a wheel diameter of twenty-six and a quarter (26.25) inches and weighs 1000 lbs. The suction system has three (3) in-take tubes. The one (1) tube at the top of the device has the opening facing upward, while the two (2) at the bottom are side-by-side, just above the central box on the back platform, and the openings are facing downward. Two (2) black lids are covering the openings of the two (2) bottom tubs. The device is located at the rear of the truck, directly over the dual wheels, and is powered by a model A Ford motor. The motor is mounted just forward of the extractor (towards the cab). Power from the motor is transmitted from the motor shaft to the extractor shaft by six (6) vee belts.
d-g) The four (4) suction tubes are made of black metal. Each tube weighs one hundred and ninety (190) pounds, is ten (10) feet long and twelve and a half (12.5) inches in diameter. Two (2) tubes are carried on each side of the truck trailer. Metal chains hold the tubes in place. One end of each tube carried on the right side of the apparatus (d-e) is painted yellow, while one end of the pair of tubes on the left (f-g) is painted red. When assembled, the tubes are held together by clamps on one tube being hooked over a ring on another tube.
