Description
Gavel, Block: Wooden gavel stained a dark color. the gavel was made from a part of the flagstaff of the old Courthouse in Red Wing.
From Red Wing newspaper article 2/3/1931 article: "Miss Margaret Densmore suggested that some relics of the old courthouse be secured for future generations. Judge Charles P. Hall stated that the flagpole had been rescued from the wreckage and had been placed in the hands of the sheriff for delivery to the society.".
From Red Wing Daily Republican 5/6/1931 article "Rare Specimens Presented to County Historical Society For Exhibition At New Courthouse": "Judge Charles P. Hall presented the society with a gavel made from the flag pole of the old courthouse, which was in service from 1858 to 1931. Judge Hall said that the gavel had been fashioned by the boys at the Training School, and that the remainder of the pole would be made into a flag staff for the historical room."
