Description
Cap, Service: World War II Army oficer's service hat. The hat is olive drab felt wool. It is 5" high in the front, 1 1/4" high in the back, 7 3/4" wide head hole, 6 3/4" long head hole. The top crown is flat and is 10 1/4" wide and 10 1/2" long. There are two brown air vent holes on the underside of the top crown on each of the two sides. In the front center is a gold metal pin with the U.S. seal emblem. U.S. seal emblem. (It is an eagle with a shield in its center. The eagle is holding an olive branch in its right claw and arrows in its left claw. There is a banner in its mouth that says "E PLURIBUS UNUM". Above the eagle is a circle with a border of small circles and 13 stars in the center.) Around the bottom of the hat is a 1 1/2" wide olive brown woven cotton band. There is a 2 1/8" brown leather visor. The underside of the visor is dull brown. Stamped in black on the underside of the visor is "LT O'GORMAN". To the side of the visor at the bottom of the crown is a gold metal button with the U.S. seal emblem. Attached to it is a 3/4" wide brown leather chin strap. The ends overlap and slide to adjust the size. The top inside crown is lined with gold plastic like material. Stamped in black on the top inside center crown is "(deocrative line)/JUSTER BROS./37 - 43 So. 6th St./Minneapolis, Minn./(decorative line)." Around the top inside of the crown is 1/2" stiff band covered in black material. Around the inside sides is a yellow woven straw band with a stiff band covered with brown material on top. Around the bottom of the straw band is brown ribbed cotton. Over this is a 1 3/4" wide brown leather band with holes on the sides. There is a brown woven bow at the back center of the band. Imprinted on the leather band in the front is "Hygieatan/Rx/A CERTIFIED LEATHER/ANTISETPICALLY MADE". Stamped in black on the underside of the leather band on the front right is "LT O'GORMAN". Written next to it in black marker is "O'G.". Written in black on the underside of the leather band in the back is "8". Under the leather band at the back is a white size label with a black outline and a black "7 1/8 / Price". To the left of this is a white union label with black print. At the top is "2187056". In the center is a circle with "UNITED HATTERS, CAP & MILLINERY W'KRS/INT. UNION" around the edge. In the center of the circle is a globe with two flags and two hands shaking and "UNION MADE". At the bottom of the label is "REGISTERED". Condition - There are a few small tears and worn marks in the felt on the top front right of the crown. There is a light white spot on the top of the crown towards the center. The inside leather band is stained. The underside of the visor is scratched.
Worn by Charles F. O'Gorman of Goodhue. He was a First Lieutenant in the Army. He was killed in action "somewhere in Tunisia", North Africa on March 28, 1943. He was supposedly the first Goodhue County resident KIA during World War II.Geographic Notes
