Description
Haversack: Civil War haversack. The haversack is made of a black, light meshlike material (painted canvas?). It is 13 3/4" long, 12 1/2" wide at the top, 8 3/4" wide at the bottom and tapers to 4 1/2" wide at the very bottom. There is a rounded closure flap in front that is 5" wide. There is no closure device for the flap. There is a 1 1/2" wide carrying strap that is approximately 18 1/2" long. It is sewn to the bag and attaches by a metal button. The left side of the strap is detached and the left button is missing. The haversack is fragile. There are holes in the flap. The right back side by the flap and strap is riped. There is a hole in the front left bottom. There are worn areas. There are light brown areas and whitish spots. This is a rare item.

Haversack carried by William H. Harrison Bruce, Goodhue during the Indian outbreak in MN in the 1860s and also in the Civil War, Company E, Third Minnesota Volunteers.
