Description
Cap, Service: World War I medical corps service hat. It is olive drab wool. It is 5" high in the front, 1 7/8" high in the back, 7" wide head hole, 7 1/2" long head hole. The top of the crown is flat and has a diameter of 10". There are two olive air vent holes on the underside of the top crown on each of the two sides. Around the bottom side of the crown is a 1 3/4" wide cotton ribbed light olive green band. In the front center is a black metal screw pin with the U.S. seal emblem. It is an eagle with a shield in its center. The eagle is holding an olive branch in its right claw and arrows in its left claw. There is a banner in its mouth that says "E PLURIBUS UNUM". Above the eagle is a circle with a border of small circles and 13 stars in the center. There is a 1 1/2" brown visor. The underside of the visor is dark green. To the side of the visor at the bottom of the crown is a black metal button with the U.S. seal emblem. Attached to it is a 1/2" wide brown leather chin strap. The ends overlap in the center and slide to adjust the size. The inside crown is lined with light brown polished cotton like material. Stamped on the top of the crown in black is "The Standard/CLOTHING HOUSE/MINNEAPOLIS". Written in black on the top of the crown is "M.W. Smith/CAP(?) __/Base/Hospital,". Around the inside bottom is a 1 3/4" brown leather band. There is an olive drab woven bow at the back center of the band. There is a red size sticker on the crown at the back with a white circle outline and a white "7 1/4". Condition - There is a tiny hole in the wool in the front right side under the top crown. There are light brown stains on the light olive green band. There are white marks on the edge of the visor. The inside lining on the crown has dark brown stains. The leather chin strap is worn.

Worn by Dr. Myron W. Smith of Red Wing. He was a Captain in the Medical Corps at Camp Custer, Michigan. Joined the service August 23, 1918.
