Description
Hood: World War I knitted face protector. It is olive green wool. It has a 5" stockinet stitch with an opening on the right and left sides. It is joined with ribbing which continues to the face opening 6" above the stockinet stitch. The ribbing continues 2 1/2" and then the knitting is decreased to the top of the head. The face opening is 2 1/2" high x 4" wide. Condition - There are no holes.
Worn by Harvey Johnson of Red Wing. He was a First Lieutenant. He joined on July 15, 1917. He left with Co. L of Red Wing on August 27, 1917, and later transferred to Battery C, 125th F.A., AEF. According to his obituary, he was a veteran of the Mexican border war and World War I, served as the captain of the Red Wing State guard unit during World War II, and in 1951 when the state guard was reactivated and he was elevated to the rank of lieutenant colonel and battalion commander..
