Description

Hat: Cadet Nurse Corps hat. The hat is light gray felt and is fedora style. The hat is 3" high and the diameter is 12". The brim is slightly off center and is 2 3/4" in the front and 2 1/4" in the back. Around the crown and brim joint is a 1" wide red grosgrain ribbon with a flat bow loop in the back. There are six rows of stitching on the brim. Inside is a gray grosgrain ribbon. On the back band is a cream cloth size label with brown "22". There is a white paper label with black "U.S. CADET NURSE CORPS/NAME Karna Dierck (in blue pen cursive) /SCHOOL St. John's Hosp: (in blue pen cursive)/ADDRESS Red Wing, Minn (in blue pen cursive)". There is an interior red and green stamp that is illegible. Condition - There are a few small worn spots. There is a small brown spot on the brim.

Worn by Karna Diercks Johnson (12/2/1926 -5/18/2008). She was born in Zumbrota. Her parents were John and Edna Diercks. She was in the Cadet Nurse Corps program. She graduated from Red Wing St. John's Hospital School of Nursing in August 1947. She probably began training in 1944 or 1945. The Cadet Nurse Corps program was from 1943-1948. Johnson was a registered nurse for 34 years at the Red Wing City Hospital, St. John's Hospital in Red Wing, and the Red Wing Health Center.
