1866Description
Banner: Cream silk banner that hung in Turner Hall. It was made in 1866. The banner is 62 1/2" x 76". The banner is embroidered. On the right side is a branch with yellow, green, and blue oak leaves with acorns. On the left side is a branch with yellow, green, and blue narrow pointed leaves with round yellow nuts. There is a blue embroidered bow tie at the bottom of the two branches, tying them together. In the center are two hands with black sleeves shaking. Behind the hands are a crossed brown and yellow torch and a silver and yellow sword. Around the inside of the wreath embroidered in heavy silver black cord from left to right are the German words "Tru/Frilch/Frei/Stnrk". Above the wreath is "Gut Fril". Below the wreath on the left is "Red Wing" and on the right is "Turnverein". These 2 banners once hung in Turner Hall (Turnverein), a building erected in 1873 by the German Turner (Athletic) society (Deutsches Turnverein) at the corner of Third and Broad Streets in Red Wing. Mildred Scherf's grandfather, Anton Scherf, saved them from the hall when it burned in 1882.
