Parasol: Japanese red and black butterfly and floral print papaer parasol used in the 1920s. The parasol is 32 1/4" long from ferrule to handle. The cover is thin paper. The paper is red on one side and black on the other side with a thin black border at the bottom. It has a pattern of two yellow and black butterflies in the black section and a creamish yellow and blue flower in the red section. There is no inside cover. The cover is approximately 17 1/2" long. The diameter when open is unknown because the parasol is too fragile to open very much. It has thin light brown wood ribs on the top inside. They are tied together with thin cream string. There is thin cream string wrapped around the bottom of the ribs above the sliding tube. There are also reddish brown wood ribs attached to the paper cover. The back side of the ribs that are inside the cover are light brown. The stick is dark brown bamboo?. The bottom of the stick has a 2 1/4" long section of light brown thin wood strips wrapped around it. The ferrule is a flat silver disc with a scalloped bottom edge. Below the ferrule is stiff material that is black on the underside and brown on the outside. White string is wrapped around the top of it in two sections. The sliding tube that opens the parasol is black painted wood. Condition - The parasol does not open very far. The paper is stiff. The paper cover has some rips and holes. The stiff material at the top has some of the brown worn off of it. There is a nick on one of the outside ribs towards the top. MOLD? - The parasol may have had mold. There were some small white spots and white dirt like small particles. It was laid out in the basement room by the elevator from 4/6 - 4/12/2010. The outside of the parasol was brushed and vacuumed on 5/4/2010. There may still be mold and dirt on it.
