Minnesota State Fair Champion banner. The banner is 18" wide x 24" long. The front of the banner is purple bonded silk. The back of the banner is black polished cotton?. The front of the banner has gold writing and a gold edging of a leaf and flower design. The top edge of the banner has a gold braid and gold braided loops around a gold wooden dowel. The dowel has larger rounded ends. There are two gold hanging chains that join at the top center and are attached to the dowel. The bottom edge of the banner has 3 points with a gold thread braided edging and a 1 3/4" long metallic gold fringe. Printed in gold on the banner is "MINNESOTA/STATE FAIR/Northwest Livestock Show/1930/(gold double circle with green four leaf clover in the center circle with a gold "H" in each leaf and "BOY'S AND GIRL'S CLUB/(bow)" in between the two circles)." Underneath the circle is "CHAMPION/SWINE/DEMONSTRATION/TEAM". Condition - There are numerous black stains on the front. The banner is coming detached from the dowel in one corner. MOLD? - The banner may have had mold. It was laid out to dry and was vacuumed on 2/2/2006.
The banner was awarded to Cletus Hallquist, Hay Creek Township, and Ralph Grant, Burnside Township for a 4-H demonstration for 1st place at the Minnesota State Fair in 1930 for McLean County System of Hog Sanitation. For winning the championship, Hallquist and Grant were awarded a trip to the International Livestock Show in Chicago. In a meat cut identification contest at this show, Grant was awarded first place.
