Description
Eleanor (Onstine) Harland, granddaughter of the Henrytown postmaster Michael Henry Onstine, was educated in the Henrytown country school during her youth. In her later life, in 1987, she made an original acrylic painting depicting a memory of the school during the winter with a group of students standing outside the front door. A few other people stand farther off on the right side of the schoolhouse. Evergreen trees stand on the right side of the school and deciduous trees with no leaves on them stand on the left side of the schoolhouse. Smoke rises from the chimney as the small wood stove contains the fire for heating the school.
The frame of the painting is wooden, and carved with a simple design on the edges. The corners stick out and a couple of leaves decorate the very tip of all the corners. The very inner edge of the frame is painted gold. This particular frame was owned by Michael Henry Onstine who also had owned the land on which the Henrytown school stood.
