Black frame with certificate saying, "United States of America. E Pluribus Unum. State of Minnesota. S. R. Van Sant. The Governor and Commander-in-Chief of the MIlitary Forces of the State to all who shall see these presents, greeting: Know Ye that reposing special trust and confidence in the patriotism, valor, fidelity, and abilities of Thomas H. Girling I do appoint him Aid-de-Camp General Staff with a rank of Colonel in the Minnesota Naitonal Guard to rank as such from the fifteenth June 1903. He is therefore carefully and diligently to discharge the duty of Aid-de-Camp by doing and performing all manner of things thereunto belonging. And I do strictly charge, and require, all Officers and Soldiers under his Command to be obedient to his orders as Aid-de-Camp. And he is to observe and follow such orders and directions, from time to time, as he shall receive from me, or the future Governor of the State of Minnesota, or other superior Officers set over him according to the rules and discipline of War. This Commission to continue in force during the pleasure of the Governor of Minnesota for the time being. Given under my hand, at the City of St. Paul, this twenty-fifth day of June on the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred and three [1903] and of the State the forty-sixth. [signed:] J. R.
