Lithic Archaeological Artifacts
Title
Lithic Archaeological Artifacts
Description
Artifacts found during the 2017-2018 Pope County Archaeological Survey.

Five lithic artifacts were found at this site including a projectile point of Fat Rock Quartz. This is a clear example of an Oxbow point, a Middle Plains Archaic type. The Oxbow point provides good chronological information for this site. Oxbow is a Middle Plains Archaic type. Estimates of chronology vary somewhat; we follow the dates given by Eighmy and LaBelle (1996), which are based on a statistical examination of 28 radiocarbon dates. They propose a range of 4,700 to 3,050 rcy BP for Oxbow. This range gives a good first estimate for the potential age of this site.
There was also a Swan River Chert core, a flake of heat treated Swan River Chert, a flake of heat-treated Tongue River Silica, and a flake of Fat Rock Quartz. These lithics were not datable
