Larry's Launderette
Title
Larry's Launderette
Creation Date
1960s
Description
Larry's Launderette self-serve laundry, located on the triangle of land formed by Fifth Avenue (5th Avenue), Military Road, and Washington Street in Anoka, facing Fifth Avenue, c. 1960s. The laundry was owned by Lawrence and Erma (Baldwin) Butler. Previously it was their grocery store, Butler's Groceries & Meats. When a National Food grocery store opened across from nearby Lincoln Elementary school, the Butlers converted their grocery to a laundromat around 1958. Signs on the building advertise Pepsi and "Coin Operating May-Tag." Two cars are parked in front of the laundry, and another car is parked in front of the building to the left.

The donor relates that Erma had to go to the laundry many mornings to kick out the high school kids who would hang out there, and once found a drunk person sleeping in one of the dryers.
